What is a patient participation group (PPG)?
- A PPG is a group of volunteers (registered patients) who work in partnership with their practice to
- Offer the patient perspective on the services that are provided
- Helping shape and improve service to patients and needs of different communities
- Improve communication between The Colne Practice and its patients
- Encourage patients to take more responsibility for their health
- Help organise health promotion information and events
- Gather feedback from patients
- Provide practical support to help implement change
- Find out about national issues and changes to the NHS
- Make a positive difference to both patients and the practice
- The PPG would meet with the practice manager and key lead staff regularly.
What should the PPG be?
- Self-organised and patient led
- Confident in its ability to challenge the practice
- Able to have an open dialogue with the practice through the Practice Manager or Head of Reception
What the PPG should not be?
- A forum for complaints
- A doctor’s fan club
- A time-consuming activity for practice staff
Benefits to the Patients
- Patients will be more responsible for and take an active interest in their own health.
- Patients will have a better understanding and knowledge of the practice and its staff and how it must operate within the structure of the NHS.
- Patients will have a forum to for positive ideas and voicing concerns.
- PPGs can offer some peer support to patients in managing their conditions, making healthy choices and accessing information

- Have a forum to voice ideas and concerns
